We are delighted to invite you for a festive viewing of the film “Sonic Sea” by directors Michelle Dougherty and Daniel Hinerfeld. This will be preceded by a brief introduction by Alex Brooker, from Clarke Saunders Associates, identifying some of the underwater acoustic themes within the film.
The oceans are not a silent world, but dynamic, living symphonies of sound. In water, sound travels five times faster, and many times farther than it does in air. Whales, dolphins, porpoises, and other marine mammals have evolved to take advantage of this perfect sonic medium. Just as we rely on sight to survive, they depend on sound to hunt for food, find mates, and detect predators. Over the last fifty years, our increasing ocean presence has dramatically transformed the acoustic environment of these majestic creatures. Undersea noise pollution is invisible, but it is damaging the web of ocean life. Sonic Sea is about understanding and protecting the vast symphony of life in our waters.
There will be a wine and mince pie reception before the film and all attendees are welcome to comment on the film at a local curry house afterwards.
The event is free to members of the IoA and the AES, as well as to students and staff of Southampton Solent University. Due to the licencing restrictions for the film the general public cannot be admitted to this event. As numbers are limited, in order to register for this event, please go to the registration page at:
Advance registration for this event is required. Registration will close 48 hours before the event. This meeting will take place in LT1, which can be found above Costa at the East Park Terrace entrance of the university, next to the main reception.
