The most fundamental skill that all music producers need is the ability to listen both critically and analytically. While there are numerous blogs, software programs and phone apps teaching us how to listen critically, little information is given on how to listen with an analytical ear. Yet without analytical listening we cannot create an emotional connection with our listening audience.

Rick Snoman is an EDM producer, remixer, engineer, and author of the Dance Music Manual (Focal Press). An iTunes certified mastering engineer with a PhD in audio technology, he has close to 30 years of experience working in both private and commercial studios worldwide. Specialising in electronic dance music, Rick has remixed numerous artists under various guises and released music under names such as Phiadra, Aeon Soul and Red5. His ghost production work for international DJs have earned millions of views on YouTube and his recording studios, Altar (based in a converted church), regularly ghost produces, engineers and masters music for a variety of electronic dance music artists. Rick recently co-chaired the EDM Academy, AES’s first-ever event devoted exclusively to electronic dance music.
