The Italian Job: Hacking Synths for Fun and Beeps with Neil Johnson, Synth-DIY UK

20 September 2022 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm Zoom

The SX1000, from Italian company JEN Electronica s.r.l., came onto the market in the late 1970s, and could be bought through home-shopping catalogues and music shops.  It was built down to a price, and many were sold throughout Europe and beyond.  In 2002 Neil acquired a non-working SX1000 and set about reverse-engineering its internals to try to get it working again.  This talk walks us through that journey, from the initial fault finding, to the enhancements and updates that were developed and tested, covering MIDI, filters, oscillators, and the bottom end.

Dr. Neil Johnson is a Senior Software Engineer at Roku UK Ltd, developing multimedia consumer products from streaming sticks and sound bars to smart TVs.  His areas of interest include low-level embedded systems hardware and software, and the design, development and reverse-engineering of electronic music synthesizers encompassing analogue, digital and MIDI technologies.  Neil is a Member of the IET, a Senior Member of the IEEE, a Member of the AES and current UK Section Chair, and is a Chartered Electrical Engineer.
